Menstrual Cycle and Mood Swings

Menstrual cycle is counted from first day of one period to first day of the next. Very first day, woman experience high bleeding throughout 4-5 days. Blood flow depends on the body mechanism and varies in various women. Typical menstrual cycle is based on 24-35 days is consider as normative. If it is shorter or longer than normal then would be issues that need to be addressed with care.

Women experience mood swings during menstrual cycle. It happens due to fluctuating of hormones. Hormones fluctuations impact the brain’s serotonin level and women experience high instability in mood. In menstrual cycle hormones plays vital role in terms of mood swings and other symptoms like fatigue, headache, cramps etc but it can seriously affect the mood. Women experience emotional withdrawal at severity level.

Menstrual Cycle and Mood Swings

When menstrual cycle starts the hormone called “estrogens “take a woman for roller-coaster ride. When a female starts bleeding estrogen rises slowly just before menstruation hits, after bleeding it drops suddenly. When menses starts estrogen hormone activated as a result severity in mood and emotional instability. Slow mood swings vary from women to women. At the end of the period it increases once again

.Dr. Dweck stated that progesterone is another hormone affecting mood swing; it drops significantly when a period starts. When menses occur progesterone level are too high which can cause feeling of dryness, sadness and also hopeless.

It is clear that mood swings are directly related to the functioning of hormones. When it functions normally the result in normal stable mood but when periods occur the hormones fluctuates it can affect the mood swings seriously. It is better to understand about which hormones plays vital role in mood swings. Take a look on each hormone.

Estrogen and mood

Progesterone and mood

Progesterone level rises in the second half of the menstrual cycle. The basic role of progesterone is to thickening the lining of uterus each month. Serotonin and mood

When progesterone level is low in menstrual cycle then it is obvious that serotonin level is low as well. The secretion of low serotonin level can result in anxiety and depression. Dr Dweck stated that serotonin drops when periods starts, due to fluctuation of hormones the symptoms may occur that is associated with depression, intensive cravings for carbohydrate.

Serotonin and mood

Things to be noticed:

When estrogen level drops it causes low serotonin a few days before menstruation, which may be the basis of many PMS symptoms. Low level of serotonin cause panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder emotional distress and psychological pain.”

At the first day of periods serotonin level rises slowly as a result in

  • Sadness
